Marijuana is perhaps the most controversial drugs of all time. Some people use it for various medical purposes. Others have banned it completely.

Over the years, there has been a significant increase in the usage of medical marijuana. In fact, several states in the United States have now legalized the usage of marijuana for treatment of multiple medical issues.

This just shows that even though recreational use of marijuana is still illegal, people are gradually beginning to understand its medical benefits.

Today, we are going to learn about some of the most common uses of medical cannabis:

Nausea and Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting usually do not require extensive medication. However, severe nausea followed by continuous vomiting caused by treatments like chemotherapy can take a serious toll on an individual’s health. In such extreme scenarios, usage of medical marijuana is recommended by some physicians.

This is where medical marijuana is commonly used. National Cancer Institute, in their trials, found out that a couple of FDA approved medical marijuana based drugs like nabilone and dronabilon reduced the nausea and vomiting caused by Chemotherapy in Cancer patients.

It also found that the drug worked well when taken orally in comparison to other lighter FDA approved drugs.

Muscle Spasms

There are few diseases that could be immensely painful for the patients. One of them is Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Medical cannabis has proven to reduce muscle tension for certain patients.

American Cancer Society conducted a study in 2004 and found that MS patients who used medical cannabis found their muscles to be more relaxed. Even their shaking was decreased to a certain extent.

Studies were performed on around 8 disabled MS patients, who experienced decreased tremors and muscle stiffness once they took the drug. However, a couple of patients also felt discomfort and paranoia but all of them got “high.”

Pain

Cannabis has been long known as a pain relief. People have always considered using medical cannabis for chronic pain caused by either the medication of chronic illnesses like MS, HIV, Cancer, etc. or the illness itself. It has, most of the times, provided them with the relief they wanted.

This was also proven in a Journal by Canadian Medical Association for which they tested 21 men and women. They were tested with four different strengths of medical marijuana. One with 9.4% THC, one at 6% THC, one at 2.5% THC and the last one placebo.

After using Cannabis for approximately one month, it was found that those who used marijuana with 9.4% THC had decreased their pain levels from 6.1 to 5.4 on an average. The researchers also stated that, marijuana that is found on streets has at least 10% THC and can decrease pain levels even further.

Insomnia

Along with the above uses, medical marijuana is also used to get rid of hyper anxiety and common sleep disorders like insomnia. Those suffering with insomnia go through tremendous amount of anxiety, depression and what not. And medical cannabis is often used as a relief by them.

According to the National Cancer Institute, test subjects suffering from insomnia and anxiety showed great improvement in their mood, anxiety, and overall health. Some patients reported much better sleep after using cannabis than without using it.
