Marijuana has always been a very interesting subject to discuss. Even though it is the most commonly used illegal drug in the US, there are many who endorse its use for medical purposes – making it a highly controversial drug as well.

According to National Institute on Drug Abuse, over 21 states allow legal possession and use of Marijuana for various medical purposes. But that’s not the end. More states including Oregon, Alaska and California are witnessing huge campaigns for its legalization.

1.    Hemp was not only legal but was grown even by George Washington

While American was still just 13 colonies, there was a law in 1619 that required farmers to grow hemp. Even President George Washington had a hemp farm.

 Thomas Jefferson even wrote a declaration of the independence of hemp. It was only in the late 19th century that people started questioning its cultivation and made it illegal in the early 20th century. Hemp was used in various different aspects of life.

 2.    United States Used It to Win Over Nazis

During the World War II, United States created a film titled “Hemp for Victory,” appreciating the profound uses of hemp. During the same period, the US government encouraged the farmers to grow hemp to use it against the Nazis. The movie was however kept secret until 1989 when Jack Herrer, a marijuana advocate handed it over to the Congress.

Marijuana is grown in various parts of the world. In the US, marijuana worth 22 million pound is grown every year; 80% of which comes from California, Tennessee, Kentucky, Hawaii and Washington.

 4.    Hemp Could be Used in Multiple Ways

Hemp is not only used to create Marijuana or for smoking. Its fibres can also be used to create strong ropes. In olden days, the rope made up of hemp was used to transport huge stones.

 Several studies have been conducted by archaeologists to figure out how ancient people moved Easter Island’s statues. And, recently it was confirmed by California State University Long Beach archaeologists that they were moved by a hemp rope. Archaeologists also confirmed that Easter Islands had woody shrubs similar to marijuana hemp that were used to make the rope.

 5.    Pot is Being Used on Pets as well

Medical marijuana is used to several different types of diseases including glaucoma, Multiple Sclerosis, etc. Recently, pet owners have started using medical marijuana for pets as well, according to Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Though weed could be helpful to animals, a lot of pet owners claim that their pet got over its effects within few hours.  

6.    Indoor Marijuana Requires Huge Amount of Electricity

Growing Marijuana indoor requires huge amount of power to grow. Throughout the nation, the electricity required to grow Marijuana indoor is sufficient enough for nearly 1.7 million households.

Which is again equivalent to the electricity generated by 6-7 big power plants.
